Dustin Martin was born in Castlemaine, Victoria to a Maori father, Shane Martin, and an Australian mother, Kathy Knight. Dustin Martin played football for Castlemaine in the Bendigo Football League before leaving school after year 9 and moving to Sydney with his father.

Dustin Martin played for the Campbelltown Football Club under 18’s for the majority of the season and for the senior team on one occasion. Meanwhile, Dustin Martin worked at his father’s transport business and his father’s girlfriend’s sports apparel business.

At the end of 2007 Dustin Martin moved back home, where he played for the Castlemaine Football Club senior side. In 2008 he played four games for the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup. Dustin Martin returned to the Pioneers side the following year and played exceptionally well, placing second in the club’s best-and-fairest award.

In Round 5, 2011 against North Melbourne, Martin had what was described by Richmond coach, Damien Hardwick, as his “coming of age” game, kicking four goals and recording 33 disposals.
